The Edit: Fall Wardrobe Essentials
Essentials, basics, wardrobe fail-safes… Whatever you call them, these key pieces are the unshakeable foundations of any look this fall. When you’re putting your list of fall wardrobe essentials together remember that “essentials” mean different things to everyone.
My best advice is to take this list with a grain of salt — consider your climate, career, lifestyle, and personal style aesthetic when determining what YOU actually need to add to your closet.
Here’s my checklist of fall wardrobe essentials that I think most women should have in their closets this fall season. Scroll down to take note of what you already have, and shop our picks for what you don’t!
Outerwear
+Moto Jacket
This classic style goes with just about everything and is a must-have layering piece. Start with black leather then build your collection to include other colors and fabrics. You’ll have one for every mood.
+Coat
The right coat can instantly make you look like the most sophisticated person in the room. Wool camel is always a good choice.
+Trench
You might think Burberry when you hear the word trench but this always-in-style coat does not have to be khaki to be
essential. It’s just as amazing if not more in suede or patent for fall.
Tops
+White button-down
Whether you tuck it into a pair of jeans for a more polished look or tie the top over your favorite slip dress—this is a versatile piece you need to own.
+Chunky Knit Sweater
A big, cream chunky sweater pairs perfectly with your favorite ripped denim.
+Turtleneck
Get a few in black and layer them under everything.
Bottoms
+Trousers
Pick up a khaki pair in the slouchy, comfortable variety. This silhouette is on the rise.
+Jeans
Wide denim with frayed edges in off-white and medium wash are very on-trend at the moment.
+Midi Skirt
Look like a “fashion girl” in a slip skirt.
Accessories
+Hat
Bucket hats may be more on-trend but felt hats will always be in style. Whichever you choose, know that an investment in a classic, well-fitting head topper will never be a bad one.
+Scarf
You can get 20 cheap-y scarves or 1-2 super-well-made beautiful ones. We recommend Acne Studios for the later.
+Booties
Start with a fresh black, leather bootie and start adding to your collection. You will cycle through them daily. They pull everything together and give the vibe of a heel but are wayyyy more comfortable. Can’t go wrong with Marc Fisher or Alexander Wang.
